Road Traveled So Far

  • Charkha has published a number of books on vital issues such as the conservation of natural resources and water harvesting and a booklet on the role of women in local self-governance.
  • Charkha has begun bimonthly publications like the Charkha Samvad, a Hindi newsletter, and its E-newsletter.
  • Charkha has initiated and established, for the past two years, the Sanjoy Ghose-Charkha Fellowship for Peace and Development for local journalists in the tension-ridden region of Jammu and Kashmir.
  • Charkha has initiated media interfaces by providing a shared platform to media representatives and rural writers and social activists in order to sensitize the mainstream media to grassroots issues.
  • In selected states Charkha has developed a network of rural reporters and development journalists to cover on-site issues concerning the rural poor and project their voices through the media.

Road Ahead

  • Rural Resource Centres: Charkha has established Rural Resource Centres in Jharkhand and Rajasthan. These centres will make available to communities, academia, media and social activists, information on Charkha-related activities. Charkha plans to establish Resource Centres in other states as well. Charkha also plans to develop a Documentation Resource Centre on Panchayati Raj institutions, with special focus on women and children-related issues.
  • Exploration of alternate media: Charkha plans to tap the vast potential of the folk or traditional media that forms an important form of communication for local communities in social mobilization.
  • Exploration of the audio-visual media: Charkha plans to extend its Community Radio Initiative to other regions. It also plans to produce short films on the achievements and challenges of the rural communities and broadcast these through public and private channels under the title Voices from the Grassroots.
  • Charkha publications: Charkha plans to publish Comics for Social Change, tracing the history, use and the scope of comics in the field of development communication.
  • Establishing Friends of Charkha: This will be a network of well-wishers and supporters of Charkha in India and overseas and those who share Charkhas vision.
