Declared
on 7 Dec 2005, this marks a divergence from the Sanjoy Ghose Fellowships
for Peace and Development for the last 2 years. Coming in
the wake of the devastating earthquake of Oct 8 and in the context
of the Relief organized by Charkha in Budgam & Kupwara,
this Award will felicitate 5 stories in Hindi, English and Urdu
written on communitys own efforts to rebuild lives Open to
rural writers/social activists/students of journalism as well as
mainstream journalists.
CII Woman Exemplar Award -2005
Charkha had the unique privilege of being invited by Confederation
of Indian Industry(CII) to suggest names for the Woman Exemplar
Award 2005 or Adarsh Sthree candidates,
instituted by CII to honour outstanding work of women in the area
of social development and inspire others to emulate them.
The Award comprising a cash award of Rs. One Lakh, a medallion and
a citation.
One of the three selected candidates, Poonam Sinsinbar was from
among the names proposed by Charkha. Poonam, a young lady
is dedicated to teaching underprivileged children, specially adolescent
girls and training them in skills for income generation
Connected with eh organisation Nav Shrishti, she now runs a center
for schooling and vocational courses at Faridabad.
The Award was given away by Hon'ble Finance Minister P.Chidambaram.
at National Conference and Annual Session of Confederation of Indian
Industry(CII) held at the Hotel Taj Palace, New Delhi on 16-17 May
2005.
In an ensuing session "Unsung Heroes-Stories that must be told"
main speaker Mr.Shankar Ghose, said that it is imperative to remove
the misconceptions of the urban India on the bleakness and backwardness
of rural communities. Stories reflecting positive initiatives of
courage, dignity and the rare spirit to rise above problems must
be reflected through the media to reach policy makers and urban
audiences. These are the principles Charkha is based on. Industry
too, he said, must address this issue and delineate a role for itself
in the present scenario.
Media Interface supported by British High Commission
Held in Vishwa Yuvak Kendra, Delhi on 21-22nd March 2005, this marked
the culmination of eleven communication skill workshops and media
interfaces held in six states with the support of there British
High Commission under the project "Capacity Building in Local
Governance" The meet facilitated a dialogue between mainstream
media representatives in Delhi both electronic and print media and
social activists/writers from. Uttaranchal, Chattisgarh, Jharkhand,
Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar. While the participants recounted
their specific experiences with the media and strategies to access
it in their regions, the resource persons threw light on the trends
within mainstream media vis-à-vis development issues and
pointers for leveraging it.
