Charkha-Sanjoy Fellowship

Peace & Development
2003-2004
Two young journalists from Kashmir -Ishfaq
-ul-Hassan of Kashmir Times and Haroon Rashid Shah of Nida-e-Mashriq,
have been awarded the "Charkha Sanjoy Ghose Fellowship for
Peace and Development 2003-2004" instituted by Charkha Development
Communication Network. The Fellowship was supported by Unniti
Foundation India to encourage reportage of people's aspirations
and initiatives to restore peace and harmony in the conflict-ridden
Valley.
Justice B.N.Kirpal, former Chief Justice of India at Gandhi Smiriti
and Darshan Samiti presented the awards to the selected fellows
on December 7, 2003. The fellowship comprises Rs.50, 000/-in cash
to each of the selected fellows for a period of six months.
Mr.Ishfaq-ul-Hassan:
Special Correspondent of the Kashmir Times, Srinagar, intents
to write about the emotional & physical pain of the divided
families across the Line of Control (LoC). He plans to do further
research on "human aspect of anguish and suffering "among
the divided families across the LoC. According to him, till date,
no such study has been done on these families. His medium of writing
will be in English.
Mr.Haroon Rashid Shah:
Executive Editor of Urdu Daily Nida-I-Mashriq, his selected issue
is shrinking of major Water Bodies in the Valley. His research
work in Urdu language will focus on the status of these water
bodies, its fauna and flora; reasons for their depletion, deforestation
and pollution and its impact on the local economy.
The study may help in reviving the earlier system of water transport,
using the lifeline of the valley- The Water Bodies. It may help
in generating employment for the communities dependent on water
bodies like fisherman community.
