Founded in 1994 by the visionary social activist, Sanjoy Ghose, Charkha Development Communication Network is an innovative non-profit organization that works towards the social and economic inclusion of rural marginalized communities through the creative use of media.

Rural marginalized communities often remain unheard and have little access to information that they can use to overcome their social and economic disadvantages. Charkha is committed to empower these communities by building their capacity to speak up at the local, state and national levels and access available resources to obtain their rights and entitlements.

RECENT ACTIVITIES

At an austere function celebrating Charkha’s Founder’s Day on December 07, 2011, also the birthday of its Founder, Sanjoy Ghose, young Ladakhi women were presented the Sanjoy Ghose Ladakh Women Writers Awards. Hon’ble Mr Justice Altamas Kabir was the Chief Guest who spoke eloquently about the value of reaching the remotest corners of India to bring justice that is truly meaningful: not just legal justice but also social and economic.

Taking forward the work carried out so far in Darbhanga and Sitamarhi Districts, a team of two – Anisur Rahman Khan of the Urdu Feature Service and Shams Tamanna of the Hindi Feature Service – travelled to the two districts between November 10-21, 2011 to teach communication skills and give access to information to a wider network of youth, thus enabling them to use the power of mainstream media to highlight the development challenges of the disadvantaged.

In the remote mountainous region of Leh-Ladakh in the Himalayas, persons with physical disability face the additional disadvantage of inaccessible terrain and scattered villages, making mobility extremely difficult. Most remain unschooled and bear the brunt of social ostracism, borne by traditional beliefs. Creating an Information Network to give them access to their rights and entitlements requires a simultaneous effort to provide them a sustainable means of livelihood to become productive members of society.
