Initiative in Kupwara District

In 2009, a four-day Communication Skill Building Session was organized in Kupwara District, bringing participants from different blocks across the district. The participating youth were introduced to the creative potential of the print media to enable the remote marginalized communities to speak about their development concerns and seek responses from the State and Civil Society Organisations to improve their living conditions.

In partnership with Srinagar-based NGO, HELP Foundation, a Resource Centre was also established in Kupwara town to disseminate information among remote villages about development schemes and opportunities. This was done by teaching a core trained group how to create Wall Magazines in the local language, that were put up in numerous villages to inform large groups of people facing difficulties due to poor connectivity and lack of information.

Since its inception in December 2009, the Resource Centre at Kupwara has benefited many households, by successfully helping them obtain widows’ pensions and other entitlements that they had not received so far. [More…]

Disaster Response

Responding to an appeal for help received from the most remote villages devastated by the earthquake in October 2005, Charkha implemented urgent and effective relief operations for select households in the remote village of Dragad at the LoC in the Tangdhar area of Kupwara District, and in Budgam District. In 2008, responding once again to several requests from women of the same households, Charkha organized a one-year program to teach embroidery skills to women from the devastated households who were still to resume their lives after the loss of lives and property in the earthquake. The initiative has enabled them to sustainably reduce the economic vulnerability of their families. [More…]

Many more such requests are being received repeatedly from the Tangdhar region near the LoC in the Kashmir Valley, from women who are in urgent need of support to improve their abilities to improve the dismal economic status of their households.
