Sasakawa Peace
Foundation - Strengthening Charkha’s Feature Service in the states
of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Uttaranchal, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar
This initiative focuses on establishing a better understanding of
the constraints of the national media with respect to providing
space for development stories. A media monitoring exercise was
undertaken in three phases (20th
August to 30th August 2005; 10th
November to 27th November 2005;
1st January to 18th
January 2006) in all the five selected states, supported by local
partners, to study for the specified time period as to how many
development stories were covered, what priority was given to
development issues and whether the coverage of development issues
was in-depth.
Charkha also commissioned a research-based study in Bihar,
"Understanding Bihar polity from the perspective of
under-privileged" in the districts of Gaya, Patna, Muzzafarpur
and Madhubani by Dr.Rahul Ramagundam. The final document was
published as a monograph and released to the media, academia and
civil society groups at the India Habitat Centre.
