Workshop for Rural Writers at Jamui

Charkha organized a five-day workshop from 27 February to 3 March 2006 at Jamui in Bihar. The workshop was a part of the series of workshops organized by Charkha during 2005-2006 in five states-Uttar Pradesh, Uttaranchal, Jharkhand, Chattisgarh and Bihar-to develop writing skills of rural writers and journalists.

Around 20 rural writers and journalists who have been making an all out effort to highlight various people-oriented socio-economic issues through their writings participated in the workshop.

The participants were addressed by Anuja Shukla from Charkha, Ms Nivedita Jha, senior journalist from Rashtriya Sahara(Hindi daily), Umashankar Chaturvedi, Sneh Kumar and Ramesh Shrivastava.

The aim of the workshop was to enhance the writing skills of participants. The participants were divided into four groups. These groups discussed various socio-economic issues related to education, land, health, women, agriculture, natural disasters, water and violence. They were taken on a field visit. These groups also prepared wall newspapers as an alternative media source. The news reports prepared by the participants were discussed in detail with them.

The workshop was organized with support from Shrambharati Khadigram, Jamui, Bihar and Sasakawa Foundation, Japan.
