CHARKHA’S URDU FEATURE SERVICE: A NEW HORIZON

Charkha launched the Urdu Feature Service for
Development on 2nd October,
2005, in rededication to the Father of our Nation, Mahatma Gandhi,
on his birthday. A function to celebrate the launch of the Urdu
Feature Service was held on Monday, 3rd
October, 2005, at the Charkha office. Eminent intellectual and
Professor, Centre for Political Studies, JNU, and also member of
Central Advisory Board of Education (CABE), Prof. Zoya Hasan was the
Chief Guest. In her address, she said that Urdu is not only a
language of poetry and literature but the language of the common man
as well. It is sad that these days, especially after 9/11, it is
being seen as the language of a particular community. Charkha’s
Urdu Feature Service, she hoped, will help in removing
misconceptions and misunderstandings. It can give a voice to the
issues and concerns of the marginalised and deprived and thereby
empower them.
Message from the Guest of
Honour, Justice SSM Quadri
The Guest of Honour, former Judge of the Supreme
Court of India, Justice SSM Quadri, speaking on the occasion said
that Urdu is the mother tongue of India. He lamented that people
have sympathy for Urdu but they don’t want to work for its
prominence. He urged that we should understand Urdu in the right
perspective. Asma Saleem, the Editor of Charkha’s Urdu Feature
Service, explained the reasons behind the launch of Charkha’s Urdu
Feature Service. She said that the Feature Service would provide a
bridge of words between the Urdu media and the marginalised
communities, especially in rural India, so that there would be
awareness about their ground realities.
Senior journalists from the Urdu press spoke about the problems
facing the Urdu media. They deeply appreciated and welcomed the
launch of Charkha’s Urdu Feature Service. They felt that this
would contribute towards broadening the areas of interest of the
Urdu media and assured their full support.
Aman Namra, Resident Editor of Charkha, delivered the vote of thanks
and presented a small token of appreciation on behalf of the
organization to the Chief Guest and the Guest of Honour.
Eminent personalities from the Urdu media who attended the function
included Farhat Ehsas, Obaid Siddiqui, Anjum Naim, Asad Mirza,
Shahid Jamal, Noor Jahan Sarwat and Masoom Muradabadi. Some of the
distinguished members of Charkha's Board who were present were Ajit Bhattacharjea, Usha Rai and
Rajeev Thakore.
