Moving Beyond Hindi and English to the Urdu Language

The Urdu Media Scene

With its established Feature Service in Hindi and English and in the absence of any such Service for Urdu readers, Charkha felt the need to look beyond the Hindi and English media towards the Urdu media, seeking their support in providing space for developmental issues of the rural and marginalized communities.

After several in-house discussions and consultations with like-minded people, it was decided that a brief study on the present Urdu Media scene needs to be conducted to understand the kind of issues and news, especially related to developmental and people’s issues, and its readership and reach. Our initial finding indicated that there are several Urdu newspapers and magazines being published in Delhi, like Roznama Rashtriya Sahara, Quami Awaz, Akhbar-E- Nau, Jadeed –in Dinon, Daily Milap, Daily Tez, Al – Yaum, Daily In Dinon, Khabardar Jadeed, Daily Pratap, Quami Aaghaz, Mashriqi Awaz, Sher-I- Punjab, Akhbare –E- Mashriq, Hind Samachar, and among the magazines are Ajkal, Khatoon- E – Mashriq, Mustaqbil, Urdu Duniya, Jehne Jadid and Karwam.

As far as the rest of the country goes, Urdu has a large readership, which is apparent from the number of Urdu dailies and periodicals published from South, West and the East like Siasat, Inquilab, Urdu Times, Munsif, Azad Hind, Awam, Akhbare –E- Mashriq, etc.  There are many rural newspapers at the regional level as well.

According to N.Ram, Editor-in-Chief of The Hindu, the Urdu language symbolizes the diverse, pluralistic and composite character of India and there is a need to help its growth.

In India, Urdu is spoken as mother tongue in some states. It is an official language of Uttar Pradesh and presently Jharkhand is under agitation in demanding Urdu as their second language.
